In the Finder, when you make an alias, the suffix alias is added to the file name. To change this suffix, simply select the Change alias suffix… menu item. Then, type in a new suffix or no suffix at all.
If you delete the entire suffix, the Finder will end up numbering your aliases since it cannot name your alias the exact same name as the original file in the same folder. (There would be to files with the same name.) If you would rather not have any suffix, I recommend that you simply use a space for the suffix. Personally, I like to use ^ (That’s a space and shift-6.)
